How to Build a Home for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

My post in the fall about my son’s ingenuity in building his own Ninja Turtle sewer lair out of cardboard has been pretty popular, and we’ve had some requests for an update. My son has made some improvements and a new addition to his original creation, and he agreed to take you on a tour:

The turtles have a hammock made from a mesh onion bag hanging above their gym.  They have a fighting ring and lots of gym equipment…

Brads and shelves on the walls hold various supplies and weapons.

They have a punching bag and a beaded curtain that heads out to the back.  Cottony stuffing the dog pulled out of his toy makes neat sewer gas coming out of the pipe.

The main part of the lair houses the living room and kitchen, tire swing, skateboard ramp, and more sewer pipes.  One new addition is a garage for the Shellraiser under Donnie’s lab.

Mikey and April enjoy relaxing and watching Mommy’s vintage Barbie-doll television while snacking on popcorn, pizza, and soda.  The drawers above the pinball machine in the back are made from matchboxes with button knobs.

Donnie has a lab now, with a computer and “real” glass windows made from clear plastic packaging material.

Around back, there is a ladder leading “above ground”, and a new bunk room,

and every turtle needs a half-pipe.

Thanks for your comment, Anonymous. Please send us a link to a photo of yours when you finish. My son thought about painting his, but once it was built, it was impossible to move it out of the room to a place where it could be painted. In hindsight, he might have painted the pieces before assembly, but it has been a work in progress. Good luck with yours!

I love it! I think that boxes are some of the best things for kids to play with- my youngest might want to do something like this for his ninja turtles!
